|Greetings Family and Friends of BWS,
Greetings and happy new year! The BWS boys have started 2012 with a bang. From community service initiatives, field trips and new curriculum units, our students have been busy. Thanks to all of you who attended our Christmas program, we had a record turnout. The BWS family genuinely appreciates your support.
In our effort to continue using the city as a classroom, our boys recently took a tour of the US Capitol with Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton, visited the National Geographic Museum of Grossology and explored the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial. Dr. King said that "the function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." At BWS we're committed to giving our boys the kind of educational experience that will help them become both scholars and gentlemen. We couldn't do it without you!

|Bag Lunch Preparation with St. Albans
BWS students have committed themselves to service in the 2011-2012 school year. In addition to enhancing our recycling program, our boys did a Mini-Walk for the Homeless that raised $890 in matching funds for Samaritan Ministry and allowed them to qualify for a $25,000 bonus donation from Fannie Mae.
In November, BWS boys and their parents collected an assortment of nonperishable food items for SOME (So Others Might Eat) and visited the Congress Heights Senior Wellness Center to sing to the elderly. Most recently, our Kindergarten class teamed up with a 5th grade class from St. Albans School to pack bag lunches for the homeless. Our school endeavors to create a culture of giving and teach our students the value of service.
|Black History Month Program
On February 23 at 10:30 a.m. the BWS boys will have a Black History Month Program. The students will present a tribute to notable African-Americans. The tribute will include a presentation of songs, skits and poems. All friends of BWS are invited to attend. Please come show your support for our boys. We look forward to seeing you there! Please send us an email email@example.com if you plan to join us.

|Worship Service with Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde
On Sunday, January 22, BWS students, parents, faculty and staff worshiped with Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde at the Church of the Holy Communion. BWS boys also performed a beautiful rendition of "This Little Light of Mine" for the congregation during the service. The BWS family is very excited to have had the opportunity to worship as a community along with Bishop Budde and the congregation of the Church of the Holy Communion.
|Birdhouse Build 2011
Volunteer, supporter and facility consultant, Robert Tomlinson, has been involved with BWS since its inception. Robert has been a regular lunch buddy since the program started. He not only has lunch with our students, but also has volunteered to teach them a variety of skills. Last year Robert donated materials to make birdhouses and volunteered his time to help the boys make them during afterschool. He also helps the boys learn and practice "technical" skills. They've put together robots, race cars and wooden sailboats. Robert played a key role in coordinating the renovation of the building and has been an exceptional asset to our work. BWS would like to thank him for his continued service.
