Greetings Family and Friends of BWS,

The Bishop Walker School has gotten off to a great start in 2012 and is looking forward to an active and productive Spring season. Since January, the boys have embarked on a host of exciting educational adventures.

Our first grade class built an entire urban neighborhood out of recycled materials in their social studies unit. Most recently, they visited the Tidal Basin to explore the natural wonders of their own city. The kindergarten class has done a great job continuing the BWS recycling program as part of our ongoing environmental education initiative. Our junior-kindergarten class is in the midst of a gardening project and is currently in week one of observing the growth of their radishes, lettuce and peas.

The boys enjoyed an uplifting and inspiring Black History Month where they learned about a number of important historical figures including Louis Armstrong, Ben Carson, Harriet Tubman and Muhammad Ali. They had an opportunity to share what they learned with their families and a record number of our supporters during our Black History Month tribute. We would like to thank everyone who came to support the boys and look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

Sincerely,

BWS Black History Month Program
Junior-Kindergarten class does parade of heroes

We would like to thank everyone who came to support our boys during the Black History Month Program. Our boys enjoyed sharing what they learned about important figures in black history through artistic, musical and dramatic expression. This was our best attended Black History Month Program to date and we look forward to having and even larger audience next year. If you missed the program click the following link for a clip from our Harlem Renaissance scene:

Volunteer Highlight

Rocket Demonstration
Charles "Charlie" Bolden has been volunteering as a lunch buddy with BWS since 2011. Mr. Bolden is the NASA Administrator and a former NASA Astronaut. He spends time mentoring our boys each month. This year he has taught them about various aspects of science, the solar system and has even done a rocket demonstration. He is a real inspiration to our boys and a model of the type of men we are preparing them to be. BWS thanks Mr. Bolden for his commitment to our students.
