Principal’s Blog Post: Excellence Focused

January 2019

The Bishop Walker School for Boys is currently in a transformation period. In our quest to become the best institution for the education of boys, some changes must be made to the physical space,  curriculum, and personnel to ensure growth within the culture. With a focus on excellence, I’ve already begun to take the appropriate steps to propel this institution forward. Similar to a dynamic game of chess, I must regularly think three to five moves ahead understanding that in this particular moment my community may not fully comprehend the steps I’m taking, but in the long run, the positive impact will help me transition BWS into the profound and impactful learning environment the founders intended it to be.

I'm committed to making sure this institution is competitive now and in the future. I'm focused on making sure that each day the scholars are learning and growing socially, emotionally, spiritually and academically, by creating the necessary structures to help them flourish in the years to come. One of the significant parts of developing a community and culture focused on excellence is making sure that all of the adult community members are devoted to the craft of educating young male scholars. With this in mind, I'm currently in the process of designing a professional development menu that lists the best professional development opportunities/experiences for the faculty and families in our community. By enriching the lives of the families and the educators in unison, BWS as a whole will be able to use the same language when discussing strengths and challenges at BWS and planning for the future. We will all increase our toolkit and thus our skillset with the goal of enhancing our scholars from within. I am also in the process of detailing all aspects of our academic program as we begin our accreditation journey. Some enhancements in the curriculum are the addition of technology classes, religion classes, regular field trips which allow the scholars to dive into the Washington, DC metro area, and an increase in black male speakers so that the scholars have the faces and stories of successful black men buzzing around them at all times.

Like all educators, I am planning for the moment while focused on the future. As we launch the new and improved version of The Bishop Walker School, I invite all who are interested in being a part of excellence in the making to tour our school. We are solely focused on becoming the embodiment of excellence and welcome all who choose to support us in this effort.
