Interim Assistant Head of School

The Bishop Walker School (BWS) is a tuition-free Episcopal school for boys in Kindergarten–5th grade, striving to alter the educational and social trajectory of children from traditionally underserved communities, preparing them for leadership and service in their communities and well beyond.

The Interim Assistant Head (Interim AHOS) works in close partnership with the Head of School to advance the school’s mission and oversee the day-to-day operations of the school. Serving on the Senior Administration Team, they will report directly to the Head of School and will have primary management responsibility (assisted by other members of the administration) for the school during the Head’s absence. 


We are seeking someone who has a positive outlook, high level of emotional intelligence, and an ability to connect with others and build relationships. A deep love for and understanding of educating elementary school boys is essential, as is having the cultural competency to work with Black and Brown boys in ways that are affirming, joyful, and supportive

The Interim Assistant Head of School is responsible for the following:


Curriculum and Instruction

  • Support monitoring of academic programs for mission driven, accreditation, and strategic planning purposes 

  • Coordinate interim accreditation report

  • Manage the daily and master schedule and calendar of curricular and cocurricular activities  

  • Ensure that teachers are properly supported, supervised, and monitored while at school and during activities such as lunch, assemblies, co-curricular activities and field trips  

  • Assist the HOS with observing, supervising, and supporting the faculty with respect to their professional development and implementation of the curriculum  

  • Establish programs for orientation of teachers to ensure that they are familiar with and adhere to school policies in all areas of the school’s operation 

  • Support the Head of school in designing, developing, and implementing strategies to create a positive, encouraging, and inspirational school culture 

  • Liaise with the technology services on the implementation and evaluation of instructional technology needs  


Students and Programming

  • Oversee reporting standards and administration of formal student assessments 

  • Ensure the maintenance of complete academic records on all students

  • Oversee the collection, management, and analysis of student academic data including attendance, standardized assessments, and behavior intervention 

  • Provide academic guidance of students with academic challenges or advanced academic performance 

  •  Maintains positive behavior supports and a standard of student behavior

  • Oversee the coordination of after-school programing  

  • Oversee the planning of summer programing  

  • Oversee the planning and the presentation of school assemblies and programs  

  • Participate in admissions activities


Other Administrative Duties

  • Attend BWS Board meetings and community events as needed 

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in education or a related area 

  • Proven commitment to elementary school education and the capacity to lead and continue development of effective curriculum and training across grades K through 5, including three or more years of academic administrative experience in roles such as an Assistant Head of School, Vice Principal, Division Director, Curriculum Coordinator, Program Coordinator, Department Chair, etc. 

  • Three or more years of successful full-time, elementary classroom teaching experience

  •  A high degree of cultural competency accompanied by a palpable and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in current and previous places of employment.

  • Experience working with underserved and underrepresented communities

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a forward-thinking leadership team

  • Strong organizational management skills to oversee multiple programs and direct reports

  • Experience and empathy to be a mentor to faculty and staff and a key resource to parents of children

  • Strong ability to strike the right balance between maintaining a warm, approachable presence and being a clear, decisive leader

  • Ability to manage difficult conversations effectively

  • Energy, optimism and a sense of humor necessary to take joy in the leadership of a school and its community

  • An ability to balance multiple demands in ways that are well organized, clearly communicated, and inclusive of a wide range of perspectives within the school.

  • Demonstrated ability to listen while engaging colleagues in conversation about professional challenges and opportunities.

  • Prior experience working at an Episcopal School is a plus


Salary range for this position is based on prior work and industry experience, education level, and unique skills.
