Director of Finance and Operations 

The Bishop Walker School (BWS) is a tuition-free Episcopal school for boys in Kindergarten–5th grade, striving to alter the educational and social trajectory of children from traditionally underserved communities, preparing them for leadership and service in their communities and well beyond.

The Position |

Director of Finance and Operations
Washington, DC

BWS seeks a Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) who will work closely with the Head of School, driving overall financial and operational management. The DFO has primary responsibility for the daily administration of the school’s campus, fostering systems, processes, and experiences that propel efficiency, coordination, safety, and sustainability in the financial and operational life of the school. 

 

The DFO will be a member of the BWS Leadership Team and is responsible for all matters of school administration that do not directly relate to classroom instruction. This role is essential to BWS’ model, which intentionally relieves the Head of School of non-instructional obligations so that s/he can focus on student achievement, faculty professional development, and board engagement.

The Director of Finance and Operations is responsible for the following:

 

Finance and Accounting Management

  • Keep the Head of School informed of the organization’s financial status through monthly reports on income and expense totals

  • Create and implement internal financial controls policy and ensure all staff adhere to guidelines

  • Collaborate with BWS accounting and administrative team to maintain accurate cash inflow processing and financial records, and secure documentation for the organization’s annual audit and 990 filing

    • Oversee checks, invoices, donations, payroll, benefits, and staff reimbursements

  • Manage invoicing process to ensure all vendors are paid accurately and in a timely fashion

  • Manage the processing of charitable gifts through the school’s fundraising database, which includes gift acknowledgments/tax receipts

  • Manage and maintain accurate records of revenue streams including tenants, the school lunch program, and parent fees

  • Budget and monitor inventory, labor, and vendor costs to improve overall profitability 

  • Oversee all aspects of free and reduced lunch programs including managing the entire application process

  • Attend Governing Board Finance Committee meetings 

  • In close partnership with the school’s finance team, serve as point contact in the annual budget planning process

  • Support budgetary tracking of school expenses to support growth

 

Operations Leadership 

  • Manage vendor and on-site services to maintain appropriate quantities, cost-effectiveness, and quality of product

  • Implement HR, health, and safety protocols that adhere to employment laws and policies, as well as advance the overall business strategy of the school

    • Bridge management and employee relations by addressing demands, grievances, or other issues

  • Maintain adherence to sound risk management and compliance needs, creating plans and managing systems for all mandated reporting to agencies

  • Support current and future human capital needs, especially the development, engagement, motivation, and preservation of staff

  • Nurture a positive operational and engaging work environment

  • Report to the Head of School and provide decision support through HR metrics, supported by human capital management systems and existing procedures within the organization 

  • Other finance and operations-specific duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related field, or at least five years of experience in a role of similar responsibility encompassing the management of finance and/or operations for a school, non-profit, or business.

  • Strong detail orientation along with effective communication skills

  • A collegial, inclusive, and entrepreneurial spirit of problem-solving.

  • A tendency for both compassion and candor in engaging, developing, and advising staff

 

The anticipated base salary range for this position is between $125,00 and $140,000 depending on prior work and industry experience, education level, and unique skills.
