Why BWS?

The Bishop Walker School is a private Episcopal school for boys in K–5th grade that strives to ignite a love for learning and a commitment to serve others. In an intellectually rich and socially engaging environment, we seek to alter the academic and social trajectory of boys living east of the Anacostia River.

Rooted in the tradition of Episcopal schools’ commitment to academic excellence and moral development, we adhere to current research on the intellectual and socio-emotional needs of boys and a progressive approach to teaching them.

How to apply

How to Apply

We seek students and their families who will be actively engaged in the life of the school and committed to upholding the school’s mission and academic and behavioral expectations. Consideration is given to applicants whose families are low-income and reside east of the Anacostia River, who come from families likely to participate in his education, and/or who have siblings at the Bishop Walker School.

2.

Submit a TANF statement or a copy of last year’s tax returns. If an applicant resides with both parents or receives financial support from a non-custodial parent, both parents/guardians must submit financial documents.

3.

Once your son's admission application is complete, the Admissions Office will contact you about scheduling an admissions assessment.

4.

Only completed applications will be considered for admission. The Admissions Committee carefully considers the potential for each applicant to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally at BWS. Families will be notified of school admission decisions in writing.

Please note: Each year our school receives many worthy applications. During the application review period it is not possible to answer calls regarding individual applications. We appreciate your understanding.

Kindergarten applicants must be 5 years old by September 15, 2025.

In-person tours are conducted on Mondays and Tuesdays. Tours for applicants in kindergarten through third grade are reserved for parents/guardians only.  During the tour, visitors will walk around the campus with the Director of Admissions to see classes in session and learn about the mission and philosophy of the school.  One of our current BWS K.I.N.G.S. may join the tour whenever possible to help answer questions.  Please contact the Admissions Office to schedule your virtual tour, or click HERE to register for an Open House.

Tuition & Financial Aid

The Bishop Walker School is a full tuition-supported school, intended for boys from underserved families. While no boy will be denied a BWS education due to a lack of family financial resources, we believe that a school can only be successful when families are invested in their child’s education. As such, families are asked to contribute time, emotional support, and other available resources according to their means. The actual cost to educate a BWS student is $20,000/year. All tuitions are funded through scholarships provided by donations from generous individuals, foundations, and parishes.

BWS is a proud participant in the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program. The program provides scholarship vouchers to DC residents who meet specific income requirements. All eligible families must apply prior to submitting their BWS application. Because students who are already attending private schools are not eligible to enroll in the program, BWS encourages all applicants to apply for the DC Opportunity Scholarship before enrolling at BWS.
